Esther Rantzen’s Husband: Who Was Desmond Wilcox?
Esther Rantzen’s husband was Desmond Wilcox, a British television producer, documentary filmmaker, journalist and TV executive. Born on 21 May 1931, he worked at both the BBC and ITV.
He began his television career as a reporter on ITV’s current affairs programme This Week before moving to the BBC. There he became co-editor and presenter of the landmark series Man Alive in 1965 and later formed the Man Alive Unit. He also produced That’s Life!, the long-running consumer programme fronted by his wife.
Wilcox had been married before. His first wife was Patsy Price, and they were together for 23 years, from 1954 until 1977. He left her for Esther after an eight-year affair.
Across both marriages, he had six children: Claire, Adam and Cassandra with Patsy, and Emily (later known as Miriam), Rebecca and Josh with Esther.
A Marriage Defined by Love and Loss
Esther became a household name in the 1970s, and it was during her rise to fame that she met Desmond. The couple spent 32 years together before he died on 6 September 2000, aged 69, following heart disease. When he died, Esther said she had spent the best years of her life at his side, adding that he had “radiated warmth and light” into their lives.
Over the decades since, she spoke openly about her grief. In 2013, she recalled that his last words to her were “I adore you,” spoken as she sat at his deathbed, and said she would carry those words with her to the grave. She also said she would choose ten more minutes with him over ten more years of life.
By 2021, her feelings had softened into something more reflective. She described feeling “stuck” after his death, likening it to wandering around in a plaster cast before being persuaded to remove it. She said the pain never disappears, but it comes with a context of celebration, which she found a “really good feeling.”
Esther herself died on Wednesday, aged 86, three years after being diagnosed with lung cancer.
Her three children with Desmond, Miriam, Rebecca and Joshua, confirmed her death and said her legacy would live on through her charities Childline and the Silver Line, and through the people who loved her. Rebecca has followed her mother into broadcasting, while Joshua has chosen to live away from the spotlight.
Desmond Wilcox remains remembered both for his influential work in television and as the great love of Esther Rantzen’s life.
